Travelogue: Newington, Edinburgh

27 October 2024

I’m a few days into this extended trip and my sleep schedule is a hot mess.

On this day I woke up around 5 am, and had a slow start, in that I took my time to get myself showered and ready as the places I planned to visit didn’t open until 9 or 10 am.

The good thing about waking up that early when you’re staying in hostels is you have a decent shot at a hot & quiet shower. Some hostels have en suite showers but the majority of hostel’s I’ve stayed in, do not. So I showered and put myself together and relaxed a bit.

Around 8 am I wandered out to a bus stop on the Royal Mile. I walk a ton when I travel, but I to take public transit too. This helps me see more and not completely wear myself out. And who doesn’t love to ride on a double decker bus??

Citrus Drizzle Cake

How did I find Newington? Well one of my goals when I travel is to try to find good coffee, I may have mentioned that before (on other posts), and in this neighbourhood I found a spot called “Kate’s” yep… that’s my name. Haha. But it’s highly rated for good coffee and delicious cakes.

When I arrived I selected two treats for the start of my day, including a cheddar scone, and a citrus drizzle cake. Drizzle cakes are quite popular in the UK and have developed quite a fondness for them. There’s something yummy about the blend of tang of the citrus with the sweet of the icing/drizzle.

After my fabulous coffee and cake I headed back towards the Royal Mile to just wander a bit. And then relax for the day.

When we travel, we can just spend all our time in the traditional tourist spots, or we can travel into smaller areas and undiscovered places (at least to us). I always like to try to do both, if time allows.

The joy of a longer trip is feeling like you can just be. You can just relax and people watch and enjoy the space you are in.

Listen. Breathe. Observe. Enjoy.

In reviewing my memories and images from the day I was reminded this was a day I had re-injured my left hand, which was another reminder to take it easy.

More to come…
