Travelogue: The Kelpies
Falkirk, Scotland | 2 November, 2024
From Edinburgh, hop on the M9 towards Grangemouth/Falkirk, as you approach Falkirk, you’ll exit to the A9, leading to the tallest equine sculpture in the world.
In a previous trip through the Scottish Highlands, I’d been able to see a lot but didn’t make it to this spot. This drive was on my first day of a 2-week exploration through Scotland, with about 9 days in and around the Highlands.
I wanted to take a slow journey, spend more time in places I’d seen on my previous trips, and also, see new things. Over 2 weeks I drove about 800 miles.
When you’re planning a trip and one of your best friends can’t join you, but says “I need a photo of the Kelpies”, you make that happen.
Once I arrived and parked, I was in immediate awe of the sculptures in the distance. There was something magical about seeing them. It was an overcast day, with layers of clouds and texture in the sky.
As I wandered the path toward the sculpture, I captured a few different angles here and there, but my faves were these.
Kelpies have a long history in Scottish lore, of creatures that would lure people to a watery death, haunt rivers and streams, or even create floods. Sneaky, yet beautiful creatures.
The Kelpies sculpture was created by Scottish artist Andy Scott, who’s currently based in Los Angeles, CA.
