headshots with one light
When you have a friend who's willing, try take advantage of them, in a good way. Here's what I mean. My friend Amber and I had been discussing doing a new round of head shots for her social media accounts. In our conversation I asked if she would be willing to let me try something else. She's my friend so she's not going to say no, right? Haha! Well she might have, but she didn't!I've been something of a nomad of late so, I travelled to her place to do the session there. We gaff tapped a fabric background (purchased at JoAnn fabrics) to her living room wall. I set up one light stand with a Yongnuo YN560II speed light and my trusty Westcott Apollo 28" soft box and boomo, in minutes the set, was set! ;-)For the traditional head shots she had two ideas in mind as far as clothing went, both were solid in colour, key you know, and we coordinated her shirts to go with each of the background options I had with me.As you can see we got some awesome shots, and I converted a couple into black and white, always a good idea to have that option available to your clients in my opinion. Then we got silly....And then we did one more wardrobe change...Oooo la la!So in about an hour, we got all of these, plus a few others, did three wardrobe changes, two background changes and obviously moved the light about to get results we were both pleased with. Most of the images were just edited in Lightroom, but the final image was edited with Alien Skin Software’s Exposure 7.Pro tip! Before you wrap things with your client I encourage you to take some shots with your iPhone/Smart Phone. These are images you can quickly send to your client and they can share on social, ideally tagging you!Photo GearCamera: Fuji XT-1, Fuji 35mm f/1.4,Lighting: Yongnuo YN560II at 1/32 Power, with Westcott Apollo 28" Softbox, right of camera.
